BOTOX® & Dysport®

Years of squinting and frowning tend to leave deep wrinkles in the skin between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose, across the forehead, and at the corners of the eyes. On many people, frown lines produce an angry or sad look that detracts from a pleasant facial appearance. Simple injections of Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic at Tucson's Skin Spectrum improve these lines without surgery and without scars.

What is BOTOX Cosmetic?

BOTOX Cosmetic is made from botulinum toxin type A, a highly purified protein used to temporarily relax muscles. We also offer a more recent alternative called Dysport® in our Tucson practice that works in a similar way. Very tiny amounts of BOTOX or Dysport are injected into specific facial muscles, causing a local relaxation. The lines and wrinkles gradually smooth out and new creases are prevented from forming. Other facial muscles, like those needed to raise the eyebrows, are not affected so a natural expression is maintained.

What does BOTOX help?

At Skin Spectrum, we are extremely skilled and experienced in using BOTOX and Dysport both proactively, to prevent early signs of aging, as well as to treat a variety of immediate concerns, including:

  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose
  • Squint lines or crow's feet at the corners of the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Platysmal muscle bands (vertical lines) often visible on the neck
  • Lower facial muscles such as the masseter muscle (to lessen the squareness and fullness of the lateral jawline), wrinkles around the mouth, and turning down at the corners of the mouth

In addition to being effective on its own, many women and men in Tucson choose BOTOX and Dysport as part of a "combineese" treatment plan. This practice of non-surgical facial rejuvenation combines multiple treatments like BOTOX, with dermal fillers and Thermage® skin tightening and a variety of other peels, microdermabrasion, micropen and other laser and light source treatments for a synergistic effect. We will perform a comprehensive assessment of your aesthetic concerns during your initial consultation and develop a plan that will help you achieve the improvements that matter the most to you.

What can I expect?

Treatment involves injection of very small amounts of BOTOX into the underlying muscles using an ultra-fine needle. Because the injections may sting slightly, anesthetic cream is available to make the procedure more comfortable. The length of your appointment will depend on the areas being treated, but is usually about 10 to 30 minutes.

It's likely that no one will notice that you have had the treatment right afterwards because the improvements appear gradually. BOTOX and Dysport take effect in as little as 1 to 2 days. Improvements generally last 3 to 6 months, and are maintained with touch-up treatments every 3 to 6 months. Often results last longer with touch-ups than after the initial treatment.

Other Applications

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can be alleviated with injections of BOTOX directly into the underarm skin or skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Sweat glands of the skin are responsible for perspiration and the excessive perspiration that some people have. BOTOX can block the release of the chemical responsible for stimulating the sweat glands. A single treatment session can provide months of relief, and injections are repeated once or twice a year to maintain dryness.

Side Effects

Side effects from BOTOX treatments are minimal and typically relate to the local injection. Soreness or mild bruising, while uncommon, may occur around the injection site. Makeup may be worn after treatment, but care should be taken to avoid pressing or massaging the area for several hours. In rare instances, a patient may develop temporary weakness of the neighboring muscles, a temporary droopy brow or eyelid, or a headache.

How much does a BOTOX treatment cost?

The cost varies depending on areas treated, but typically ranges from $180 to $600 for treating facial lines. Treatment for excessive sweating requires a higher dose of BOTOX and usually costs $1000 or more.
