What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the gold-standard treatment for both varicose veins and spider veins. Our Tucson medical professionals treat unsightly veins on common trouble spots like the thighs, inner knees, and ankles. We also treat enlarged veins on the backs of the hands. At Skin Spectrum, we use a very small, fine needle to inject a state-of-the art, FDA approved, sclerosing solution called Polidocanol into the vein. This advanced solution makes treatments virtually painless but irritates the vein and causes it to collapse and be absorbed by the body.

Why is the consult necessary?

Each patient is evaluated during the initial consultation to determine the best treatment options based on medical history, physical exam, and ultrasound. At Skin Spectrum, we treat all sizes and types of veins and will develop a specific treatment plan for your unique needs.

Who is qualified to perform sclerotherapy?

Since this treatment involves injecting a medication into the blood stream, sclerotherapy should only be performed by health professionals licensed to give medication injections, such as RNs, PAs, or MDs.

Are there side effects or complications?

Most patients report few, if any, minor side effects, which usually disappear in time. Temporary reactions can include slight itching, minor bruising, localized redness, and minor tenderness over larger treated veins. Some patients experience pigmentation, or staining, of the skin where the blood vessel once was. This pigmentation is not usually permanent and fades with time.

Is laser better than sclerotherapy?

Laser is not better than sclerotherapy, but can be used in conjunction with sclerotherapy. Patients who have clusters of very fine small veins that resemble bruises, called matting, are good candidates for CoolTouch VARIA™ laser treatments. However, for most patients, initial treatment with sclerotherapy will give better overall results. VARIA is also an effective option for eliminating smaller facial veins. The VARIA laser option will be discussed at your leg vein consultation.

Are there any restrictions or requirements after treatment?

Compression hose and gloves must be worn after leg and hand vein treatment, respectfully, to obtain optimal results. Compression hose are available in the office for purchase. All patients are encouraged to walk after treatment, but heavy cardiovascular or high impact workouts and weight training are discouraged for one week after treatment. Avoid soaking in hot tubs to prevent potential infection, and avoid sun exposure to avoid potential pigmentation issues immediately after your vein injection.

What are the expected results?

With sclerotherapy, most patients can expect a 60% improvement in the number of veins with each treatment. While our experienced staff will ensure your treatment is performed with utmost care and precision, your individual results will also depend on how carefully you follow your post-treatment instructions and your body's unique healing capabilities.

Most patients require 2 to 3 treatments performed approximately 6 to 8 weeks apart. We will estimate the number of treatments you will likely require and the expected costs at the initial consultation. Veins sometimes start to fade immediately, but more often fade in the 6 to 8 weeks following treatment.

Is sclerotherapy dangerous?

Sclerotherapy in Tucson, Arizona, has few risks and is tolerated well when performed by a skilled provider. Regular treatment of spider veins and varicose veins – before they become advanced – can actually improve the circulation.
