Obagi Blue Peel
What is a Blue Peel®?
A Blue Peel® is a chemical peel, which is used to improve the appearance of the skin. In this treatment, a chemical solution, containing trichloroacetic acid, is applied to the skin and causes it to eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is smoother and more even than the old skin. Dermatologists have used various peeling agents for the last 50 years. Peels are technique dependent and only experts should perform various types of chemical peels. A thorough skin evaluation is imperative before embarking upon a chemical peel.
What can the Blue Peel® do?
The Blue Peel® does a beautiful job refreshing the overall appearance of skin pigmentation. Pigmentation of the skin in the form of sun spots, age spots, liver spots, freckles, splotching due to taking birth control pills, and skin that is dull in texture and color improve with the Blue Peel®. It is often used to treat fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth and acne scarring. Wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging and hereditary factors can often be reduced with this procedure. However, sags, bulges, and more severe wrinkles may require other kinds of cosmetic procedures such as filler, laser resurfacing, or plastic surgery.
What can I expect?
Prior to surgery, instructions may include the elimination of certain drugs and the preparation of the skin with topical pre-conditioning medications. A chemical peel is an outpatient procedure. At the time of treatment the skin is thoroughly cleansed. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is used in combination with Dr. Obagi's Blue Peel® Pigment. During a chemical peel, one of Skin Spectrum's board certified dermatologists Dr. Jody Comstock or Dr. Tina Pai applies the solution to the skin. These applications produce a controlled peel, enabling new, refreshed skin to appear. Most patients experience a warm to hot sensation, which lasts about five to ten minutes. Medications are prescribed to diminish discomfort and help you relax. It is necessary to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
What can I expect after treatment?
Following a Blue Peel®, the skin feels very taut and dry. It is initially red and then takes on a brown color. It will flake and peel over a period of about one week. It is important to avoid overexposure to the sun after a chemical peel since the new skin is fragile. Proper follow up skin care will be prescribed to reduce chance of sunburn, irritation, or pigmentation problems.
