Laser skin resurfacing at our Tucson dermatology center can be an excellent solution for a number of different skin concerns—both mild and severe. However, before you go in for treatment, it is important to do a little research.

Know what you want.

Laser treatments can address a wide array of skin conditions:

  • Acne scars
  • Sun spots/freckles
  • Sagging skin
  • Large pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

However, not all lasers are equal—each laser is designed for slightly different things. When you come in for consultation, have an idea of what you would like to improve. Then after discussing your desired results, we can create a customized treatment plan that fits your needs.

Do your research.

It is important to understand the difference between ablative and non-ablative lasers. Ablative laser treatments remove the top layer of skin, while non-ablative laser treatments heat up the underlying skin tissue to trigger collagen growth without harming the skin’s surface. Ablative lasers require more recovery time; however, patients are usually satisfied after one treatment. Non-ablative lasers have shorter recovery times, but patients typically need multiple treatments to achieve their desired results.

Prep for your appointment.

Listen carefully to pre-treatment instructions to avoid delayed healing or complications post-procedure. To ensure safety:

  • Avoid the sun for several days before and after your treatment
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher, preferably containing zinc oxide and titanium oxide
  • Stop taking blood-thinning medication during the week before your treatment
  • Do not smoke

Arrange for a ride to and from your doctor’s office on the day of your treatment, if needed. Additionally, make sure you understand post-treatment care instructions before you leave your appointment.

Prep for recovery.

Ask your physician to give you any prescriptions and a list of necessary supplies—dressings, ointments, etc. Do this before your procedure, so you have everything you need waiting for you at home. Depending on which type of laser treatment you get, recovery can take anywhere from 1 day to upwards of a week. Get a rough estimate on how much downtime you’ll need so you can plan accordingly.

Understand possible side effects.

When performed by a trained professional, laser treatments are safe and can provide you with dramatic improvements. Though complications are uncommon, it is important to note the possible side effects:

  • Mild discomfort during or after your procedure
  • Redness, swelling, and itching
  • Darkening of the treated area (hyperpigmentation)
  • Lightening of the treated area (hypopigmentation)
  • Scarring
  • Infection
