What is CoolTone?
Allergan, the makers of CoolSculpting, developed CoolTone, which is a body sculpting technology that uses magnetic pulses to strengthen underlying muscle. This tones and firms the muscle, improving appearance and definition. The CoolTone device is gently positioned on the desired treatment area and integrates with a computer system that monitors and precisely targets the pulses applied to targeted areas, ensuring flawless results. You and your dermatologist can monitor the entire process via a computer screen. The CoolTone device has been cleared by the FDA for the treatment of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs.
What Does CoolTone Treat?
Men and women with stable health and near their target body weights are great candidates for CoolTone. The goal of CoolTone treatment is to firm, tone, and strengthen muscles. While some patients do see minimal weight loss after treatment, CoolTone is not recommended to help with weight loss. CoolTone is also not recommended for people who have electronic devices, metal, implants, or diminished sensation in or near the targeted area. This includes such devices such as a pacemaker, cochlear implant and copper IUD. Apart from these cases and a few rare medical concerns that may limit safety or efficacy, CoolTone is an effective way to help improve the appearance and strength of muscle tissue in just about anyone. CoolTone treatment is approved for muscle toning and sculpting in the following areas:
As research and data collection continue, more treatment areas may be cleared for CoolTone by the FDA in the coming years.
What is Magentic Muscle Stimulation?
While CoolTone is a member of the CoolSculpting family, it does not rely on cold to freeze away stubborn fat cells. Instead, magnetic muscle stimulation (MMS) pulses are used to contract the muscles, improving strength and definition. The magnetic pulses are applied to specific muscle groups using the innovative CoolTone hand tool. The chairside computer system precisely monitors and distributes the magnetic pulses to ensure consistent delivery. The MMS pulses are much stronger than those associated with similar treatments, so patients typically see more dramatic results. This is a completely non-invasive procedure that is safely performed in our dermatology practices. The complete CoolTone MMS treatment process is detailed below.
Before we recommend any treatment, even one as minimally invasive and comfortable as CoolTone, we will ask you to schedule a consultation. We’ll discuss your goals, review treatment options, and ensure CoolTone is the right treatment to achieve the desired results. We’ll also want to review information about your health and medication history, so you should be prepared to discuss any concerns that may be relevant. If you decided that CoolTone is the right option, you’ll only need to schedule a few hours out of your day. In most cases, you’ll be in and out of our office in one to two hours at maximum, and you can go right back to your regular schedule after. Currently, total treatment time is 20-30 minutes per area. Bilateral sites are treated simultaneously with the two handpieces.
The Procedure Itself
On the day of your CoolTone treatment, we’ll capture images and take measurements of your target area. These pictures and measurements are comparison tools we will use to track your progress over the coming weeks. Then, we will get started applying the CoolTone device right away. You will not need any numbing or anesthesia, but you may experience some very minor discomfort during treatment. Patients often describe the experience as being similar to muscle contraction during a strenuous workout. In most cases, this feeling is intense when we first apply the pulses, and it diminishes a few minutes into the treatment. The muscle contractions caused by CoolTone strengthen muscles and increase muscle fiber, leaving you with muscles that are firmer, toned, and have greater definition.
The Follow Up Visit
Once we’re done with your initial treatment session(s), we’ll schedule a follow up in a few weeks. During this appointment, we’ll take more pictures of the treatment area that will be compared with your original photos to gauge progress. From there, we can determine what the next steps should be, and in most cases, we will recommend a maintenance program for the treated area(s).
Typical Procedure Length
We call CoolTone a “lunch break” procedure. Depending on the area(s) we’re treating, the entire process in our office from check-in to check-out is finished within one to two hours. Best of all, there’s no downtime, so you can go right back to your daily routine, including exercising, as soon as you leave.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
Following CoolTone procedures, the vast majority of people reported little to no adverse effects or downtime. There may be some minor muscle soreness that is similar to a strenuous workout for a few hours or days after treatment. Mild muscle aches, swelling, and spasms in the joints may also happen, but this is temporary and usually ceases within 24 hours. Additionally, some patients had erythema, localized skin redness over the treatment area, which resolves itself within a few hours. Most people don’t even experience these very mild side effects, but if you are concerned, let your dermatologist know. We can recommend over the counter pain relievers and other products to improve your comfort.
In some cases, women who are menstruating reported increased pain, cramping, and discomfort after abdominal CoolTone treatment. For those who are close to their cycles, CoolTone may cause menstruation to begin more quickly. The week immediately after the end of the menstrual cycle is usually the best time to schedule CoolTone treatments. Other health risk factors that may require treatment preapproval from physicians or specialists include:
- Grave’s disease
- Bleeding disorders
- Seizure disorders
When You Should See Results
Many people worry that CoolTone didn’t work because it takes weeks for the first results to be obvious as the muscles grow and reshape following treatment. You should start seeing changes in three to four weeks with maximum results visible in two to four months.
Typical Treatment & Retreatment Schedule
In most cases, people see their desired result in four CoolTone sessions performed over a two-week period. However, some people are happy after just one or two treatments, and others may end up with as many as eight sessions before they’re completely satisfied. We’ll create a plan that is 100% unique to you and your goals.
How Long Will Results Last?
While CoolTone does not necessarily remove fat cells like CoolSculpting and other products from the Allergan family, it does have one great long-term effect – increased fat metabolism. This means that your body’s ability to burn fat and build muscle is actually improved by the CoolTone treatment process, and this change is usually permanent. However, the added muscle definition may begin to diminish over time, even if you maintain a good workout routine. Depending on your individual experience, we may recommend CoolTone maintenance treatments one to four times a year.
