As many of us already know, the lips aren’t immune from the effects of aging. In fact, they’re often among the first areas of the face to become visibly old thanks to their delicate, thin skin and near-constant exposure to the sun. FDA-approved JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA adds lip injections to the benefits our Tucson, Arizona, patients recieve from dermal fillers.
Are You a Candidate?
VOLBELLA is intended just for the lips. It can provide a variety of improvements, which include the following:
- Restoring diminished volume lost to aging
- Plumping up naturally thin lips
- Smoothing out lines and wrinkles on the lips
- Balancing the size or shape of asymmetrical lips
- Defining flattened lips
You shouldn’t undergo a treatment with VOLBELLA if you’re sensitive to any of its ingredients or if you have an existing bleeding condition. To treat lines and wrinkles around the mouth and other parts of the face, consider the other dermal fillerproducts we offer from JUVÉDERM and Restylane®.
As a Vycross® technology advisor, Dr. Comstock understands when and how products should be administered. She works closely with patients to develop treatment plans that match their lifestyles and cosmetic goals.
Treatment with VOLBELLA is typically quite quick. Your injector uses a cleanser to remove makeup before making several quick injections into your lips. You may feel a quick pinch, but the procedure is not painful. Afterward, your lips will likely feel and look a bit swollen and tender. This is normal and it typically subsides within a day or so. Your fuller, well-defined lips can last for up to 1 year after your treatment.
Juvederm Voluma XC
Injectable dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®, are popular options at our Tucson practice for patients who wish to smooth wrinkles and refresh their faces without the downtime or expense associated with surgery. Until recently, lines and wrinkles were the primary focus of these dermal fillers. Although they could create beautiful results, they only addressed one component of facial aging. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is the first injectable filler to be FDA-approved to replace lost volume in the cheeks, another component of aging, and create a youthful plumpness.
I baked in the sun nearly every day as a teenager. Now I have deep wrinkles around my mouth. What can I do?
– KAREN, Green Valley
Sun damage breaks down collagen and frequently causes some of the deepest wrinkles. For extensive sun damage you may need ablative laser treatments, which require healing time. For mild sun damage, you can get excellent results by using fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®. Done properly, you should not be able to tell who has filler around the mouth; it should just look better.
from Dr. Pai
What is JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC?
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is an FDA-approved injectable gel that’s used to add volume to the cheeks, restoring a plump, youthful appearance to an area where volume is commonly lost over time. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is made with hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in our own skin. Hyaluronic acid keeps the skin hydrated and soft, but its production often slows with age, contributing to wrinkles and skin laxity. When injected into the cheeks by an experienced medical professional, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC creates a fuller, rounder appearance for a youthful-looking profile. Our injectors have been trained to administer this product with a conservative, subtle approach that gives the cheeks a lifted, natural look without appearing puffy.
What does JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC help?
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is intended for use in the cheeks. It is the first and only injectable filler that’s been FDA-approved to replace lost volume in this important area of the face. Skin Spectrum offers a wide selection of safe, effective dermal fillers for treating other areas of the face that show fine lines or wrinkles. Your treatment could also be combined with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections for wrinkles around the eyes. During your consultation, Dr. Comstock or Dr. Pai works with you to develop a treatment plan that addresses each of your aesthetic concerns.

What can I expect?
At our Tucson practice, a typical JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC procedure is similar to other dermal filler treatments. Our Skin Spectrum specialists, who have extensive experience and training as injectors, consult with each patient and perform the treatments. Our Skin Spectrum specialists will first cleanse and numb the area to be treated with a topical anesthetic or cold compress. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC comes pre-formulated with lidocaine, an anesthetic, so patient comfort is enhanced. The product is then injected into the cheeks using a fine needle. Most sessions take less than 30 minutes to complete. Patients should avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sun exposure for the first 24 hours after treatment.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC differs from other injectable dermal fillers in that the results of a single treatment can last for up to 2 years. Its longevity makes it a great option for people who prefer not to return regularly for touch-ups.
JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus
With its larger molecules, JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus is another option for our patients that’s ideal for treating deeper lines and wrinkles, as well as adding volume and shape to the lips. Also made from hyaluronic acid, this injectable filler can beautifully complement the effects of VOLUMA, or it can be quite effective on its own.
The side effects of JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC are typically mild and temporary and are similar to those of other injectable dermal fillers. Following your treatment, you may experience swelling, tenderness, bruising, redness, and itching near the injection site. These effects typically diminish within 2 to 4 weeks.

What They Treat
Both Restylane and Restylane Silk are hyaluronic acid-based fillers. Hyaluronic acid is already naturally present in the body and keeps skin and connective tissue soft and resilient. With age, the natural production of hyaluronic acid diminishes — a process that’s partially responsible for the development of sagging skin and wrinkles.
The different formulations of each product make them better suited for specific areas of the face.
- Restylane uses medium-sized hyaluronic acid particles to fill in moderate to severe lines and wrinkles. It’s especially adept at treating lines around the mouth, eyes and nose, including nasolabial folds, lip lines, and the corners of the mouth. For many men and women, these lines are some of the earliest signs of facial aging.
- Restylane Silk is intended just for the lips and the lines around it. Its small particles effortlessly add volume and shape to thin lips, creating a youthful-looking pout that looks great on anyone. In a clinical study, 98% of patients who were treated with Restylane Silk saw noticeable improvement in the fullness of their lips 2 weeks after injection, with results that can last for 6 months or longer.
I’ve struggled for years with dark circles under my eyes. What can you do to get rid of them?
– CARLY, Tucsony
You can make dark circles less noticeable by getting proper sleep, maintaining excellent nutrition and hydration, and keeping your allergies under control. Collagen stimulators such as alpha hydroxy acids or Retin-A can also help. Treatment with a laser or a light source can make the skin smoother and lighter in color. Our favorite fix is injecting a small amount of hyaluronic acid filler just beneath the skin. It lightens the shadow and lasts two to three years.
from Dr. Pai
What You Can Expect
Treatment with injectables is a relatively straightforward experience here in our office. Once you’ve consulted with either Dr. Comstock or Dr. Pai, one of our experienced injectors cleanses your treatment area. At Skin Spectrum, we use very fine needles and topical anesthetic to ensure your injections are as comfortable as possible.
Once the anesthetic has taken effect, your practitioner administers the product in a series of quick injections in or around your targeted areas. In many cases, we administer combinations of different products during the same appointment to resolve each patient’s specific concerns.
During your consultation, we may determine that another dermal filler such as Restylane Lyft® or a neuromodulator such as BOTOX® Cosmetic can complement your results.
After your treatment, there’s no need to spend any time recuperating at home. You may return to your daily routine as soon as you leave our office. You may experience some localized soreness, redness, bruising, or itchiness, the side effects of Restylane and Restylane Silk should not hinder you from your regular activities.
A decrease in volume and an increase in wrinkles are the hallmarks of the aging face. For a nonsurgical approach to restoring lost volume, there’s Restylane Lyft in Tucson, Arizona, at Skin Spectrum. A dermal filler designed to bring renewed energy to the face, Restylane Lyft is part of our menu of medical spa services.
Are You a Candidate?
Candidates for Restylane Lyft are adult men and women who are bothered by one or more of the following conditions:
- Lost volume in the area midface region beneath the eyes and above the cheeks
- Lost volume or sagging in the cheeks
- Lost volume and definition in the jawline
- Prominent nasolabial folds (the lines that extend from the nose to the outer corners of the mouth)
Restylane Lyft is nonsurgical and generally well-tolerated. However, it’s not appropriate for people with bleeding disorders or those who are allergic or sensitive to any of its ingredients.
My old smoking habit has left me with pucker lines around my lips. I no longer smoke and I’d like to look better. What can I do?
– MARIA, Tucson
First of all, congratulations on quitting smoking! Wrinkles around the mouth are called rhytides and are hated by all of us. We use non-surgical laser treatments for patients with mild sun damage or patients who don’t want healing time. Our favorite treatments are excellent fillers such as Restylane®, Perlane®, and JUVÉDERM®. These are hylaluronic acids that are identical to what our bodies make and last at least six months to a year. New studies also show they help build new collagen. Repeated treatments provide longer lasting results. Deeper wrinkles may need the more aggressive CO2 laser for optimal results.
from Dr. Pai
Your Restylane Lyft treatment is much like other dermal filler treatments. Your practitioner first cleanses the areas to be injected and may offer you a topical numbing agent to maintain your comfort. Each injection lasts for only a moment, and your entire appointment likely won’t exceed 30 minutes. After your visit, you can return to your normal activities immediately, with your initial results visible right away. Improvements from Restylane Lyft last for at least 12 months.
